John Howat BFA Secretary

I took up beekeeping over twenty years ago when I was employed in the IT department of a major utility. The courses at Sparsholt College gave me excellent grounding, and I built up to twenty hives run in my spare time. Eight years ago I took early retirement and bought a friend’s outfit. I now keep around one hundred hives scattered around the South Hampshire area. All of my hives are Langstroth Jumbo, twelve of which fit neatly into my Land-Rover 110 pick-up. With another sixteen on a trailer I take hives of bees to pollination and to the heather. I find that beekeeping is harder work than sitting in an office but much more satisfying.
